ALL STAR BASEBALL TIP OF THE WEEK

Posted on 07:36 by blogger

This week's All Star Baseball Tip is from one of our top, new instructors at the Warminster Academy, JD Reichenbach.  JD has been a standout lefthanded pitcher in college and knows how to work with young pitchers to make them successful.  To schedule a lesson package with JD at Warminster, call our staff at 1-215-672-1826.
Building A Regular Routine Is Key for Starting Pitchers!
Aside from working on achieving repeatable mechanics that work well with each individual pitcher, with my older students we have begun talking about preparation and the proper routines leading up to a start or a relief appearance.
Coming up with a routine that works for you is a very important element that is sometimes overlooked. The days leading up to a start can greatly influence the outcome of your starting appearance on the mound. Feeling prepared and that you have done everything in your power before your appearance in a game will build confidence and prepare you for success. Talk with your coach, talk with other players, and try to understand what they do that helps them to feel prepared.  Arrange your routine accordingly. Write it down, change things and shape it into your own-- no one routine is the same.
I have included an example of a routine. This is for a starting pitcher, but there are also routines for relief pitchers as well. Sculpt a routine that works for you, and stick to that routine to keep yourself prepared for every outing that you may have.
Starting Pitcher Routine:
Make Start
-Run long distance after start, followed by band sequence.
            -Lift
Day after start
-Flush (throw for 2 minutes at 90 feet)
-Run long distance run, high intensity 25-30 minutes
            -Finish with band sequence
2 Days after start
            -Long Toss
            -Sprint work (high intensity)
            -Band sequence
            -Lift
3rd Day after start
-Stretch it out with your arm, then throw on flat-ground, work on all pitches.
-Also discuss what went on during the last start and the goals for the next start.
-This is also the time to work on any drills that you may need to work on.
-Run a medium to long distance run, do not over do it.
4th Day (Day before your next start)
-45 foot bullpen work, do not over do it on the mound, work on all your pitches and get comfortable with all your pitches.
-Discuss your approach for tomorrow’s start with coach and how you will be attacking the opposing team's line-up.
Make next start…. throw hard, and win!
Building a successful routine for yourself, and tracking it day by day, will help you become a consistent, successful starting pitcher!  Work with your coach and your catcher on a routine that works for you and then repeat it through your season.

ALL STAR BASEBALL TIP OF THE WEEK.... from Todd Davison

Posted on 04:31 by blogger

This week's Tip is from Todd Davison, Manager of our Broomall Academy and a former star infielder in college and professional baseball.  He was also a speedy runner who could make an impact on the bases.  To schedule a lesson package with Todd or other top instructors at ASBA Broomall, call our staff at 610-355-2411 to sign up!

Base Running Should Be Practiced More, and Can Help Your Team Win!

Base running is a huge part of baseball that young players don't practice enough. Running hard through first base (not to the base) is the first step!

When running to first, the player must take 3 looks on his way to the base. The first look is after the player hits the ball.  At 3 steps into his run he must look into the field to locate the baseball. The next look is down on the first base bag to make sure he touches the front edge of the base with the front half of the foot.

The third and final look is after running through the base, the player must break down and look to his right to see if there is an overthrow.  If you hit the ball into the outfield, you will make your turn and look toward second base.  Listen to your first base coach and his verbal instructions, too.

With these 3 looks, the player will be aware of the ball location, the location of the first base bag to avoid injury, and possible situations like an overthrow or a liner into the outfield gap where he can advance to the next base. Injury is common when running to first base at all levels, so the proper technique and the use of the "3 Looks" are important components for you as a developing player in the game of baseball.  These practices are often overlooked but they can help you contribute to your team's offense and make you a better player, too.

All STAR BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Patrick Drago

Posted on 04:00 by blogger

Patrick Drago, Lionville Middle School
The ASBA Player of the Week Award this week goes to Patrick Drago, a 14 year old 8th grader at Lionville Middle School.  Patrick has been working hard on his baseball skills over the last two months, specifically on his hitting, his outfield skills, and agility drills.
"Every time he comes into the academy at Downingtown he has a positive attitude and is determined to continue to get better throughout his all-around game," said instructor Dave Slusser, who coaches Patrick.  "Week after week, Patrick has shown solid improvements, especially in his hitting. We have been working hard on getting him to a good 'load' position with his hands and making sure his footwork and lower half are under control.
"He has great 'pop' off the bat.  Getting his whole body working together is one of our goals for the future. I have been very impressed with Patrick's ability to understand and retain the material he is learning week by week. Patrick is an intelligent kid and I really enjoy working with him on the game of baseball and his skills," added Slusser.
"Pat's favorite position is center field. He gets to run a lot and field in this position," smiled Debbie Drago, Parick's Mom.

"I have noticed remarkable changes in Pat's performance through his lessons at All Star," continued Debbie.  "His confidence level has soared. He is more willing to try out for teams. When he is hitting, he is making contact more often and he has learned how to control the power he puts into his swing. Dave has also worked on his footwork for fielding. This has helped with Pat's agility and overall ability to field ground balls and catch. His next goal is to gain a stronger arm to throw farther, and with more accuracy. But under Dave's help, I am sure that this skill will also happen."
Congratulations, Patrick, for being named the ASBA Player of the Week and keep up the hard work with your lessons at Downingtown!

ALL STAR BASEBALL'S TIP OF THE WEEK...from Keith Falcone

Posted on 08:57 by blogger

This week's Tip is from Keith Falcone, Baseball Operations Manager and one of the top instructors at our Downingtown Academy.  Keith starred as an All-Conference pitcher at York College in central PA and helped York to a Top 20 ranking in Division III as a junior in college.  To schedule a lesson package with Keith Falcone, call our Downingtown staff at 610-518-7400.

REPEATING A GOOD DELIVERY IS KEY FOR TOP PITCHERS!

One of the most common things talked about in regards to pitching is the ability to create a repeatable delivery.  In order to do so, pitchers must be able to achieve a consistent balance point and hand break.  One of the key areas I focus on with pitchers is keeping their head still throughout the delivery.

Head movement is usually a result of a few things that can go wrong during the delivery. So, if I a player can focus on his head staying still,  it can help correct some of the other inconsistencies in his delivery.  The pitcher’s head should stay level and still and should move in a straight line towards his target.

Any head movement – up, down, left, or right -- will cause a change in a pitcher's release point.  So the next time you are struggling to throw pitches into the strike zone, ask yourself if you are keeping your head still.  This will make a big difference in your consistency and control as a young pitcher.

ALL STAR BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jake Drossner

Posted on 04:20 by blogger
Jake Drossner of Council Rock North
Star Pitcher for ASBA Showcase Team

All Star Baseball Academy is pleased to feature standout pitcher Jake Drossner as our Player of the Week.

Jake is a lefthanded pitcher from Council Rock North High School who recently committed to The University of Maryland. Jake pitched for Coach Mike Manning's ASBA Showcase team this summer and fall. The summer and fall schedule took Jake to all of the top showcase events like the Mid-Atlantic Top 100 Showcase, Select Fest, the WWBA 17U National Championships and the WWBA World Champiuonships in Jupiter, FL.

In Jupiter, Jake pitched a great game vs. the Indiana Lids Bulls, throwing 4 shutout innings while striking out 7 hitters. Over the past year, Jake was also recruited by Coastal Carolina, UConn, Rutgers, Penn State and UNC Chapel Hill.

"We are really excited for Jake and his family," said Coach Mike Manning of ASBA.  "The University of Maryland is in the beginning stages of resurrecting a strong program under Head Coach Eric Bakich. Having the opportunity to be part of the rebuilding process is a great situation for Jake. He should get the chance to pitch right out of the gate, which will enhance his development."

"I have known Coach Bakich since his playing days at East Carolina," added Manning.  "With some new talented players like Jake, Coach Bakich should give the Terps a chance to improve and compete for a winning record in the ACC next year."

Jake will join fellow ASBA Showcase Team players Greg Olinski and Andrew Amaro at the University of Maryland.  Congratulations, Jake, on being named the All Star Baseball Player of the Week.
